Paul & Jenn Engagement shoot – Erskine

Here is a little look at some shots that I got with Paul and Jenn outside their wedding venue at Erskine Chapel in Island Bay. For every wedding that I shoot we include an engagement shoot in the package. We’ll take the photos typically around or near the venue so that we can get creative and take our time to explore. Plus it’s a great chance to get to know each other better and practice in front of the lens.  We find it saves us a lot of time for the big day which means that Paul and Jenn can get back to the venue sooner to enjoy time with friends and family.

My Gear List

Behind the lens

If you love photography then the internet is a great place for you. There are seemingly limitless examples of super talented photographers in each corner of the globe. Personally I’ve used the web to find inspiration when I need to get creative, or to answer a tech question when I need to learn about f-stops and hyperfocal distances. Even though I have a huge amount of equipment I’ll be the first to tell you the best camera is the one that’s with you. Often, while out travelling Jen and I will reach for the handy iPhone to snap off a pic and the results can be great and the real benefit is that you can share your image instantly with the world.

Before I go into detail about the gear I shoot with I’d like to share a little thought with you. I believe that the magic happens behind the lens, not necessarily in it. If you want to be a better photographer then focus on your own creative skills and technical knowledge before rushing out and dropping thousands of dollars on the latest gadget. If you have a point and shoot, or an entry level DSLR you can still take great shots. Cameras don’t take great photos, people take great photos. If you understand great light, composition, framing and timing then it doesn’t matter what camera you own.

So with that in mind I thought I’d open up a channel to pass on the knowledge that I’ve acquired over the years. You can ask me a question in the comments below or get in touch via the Contact page in the menu.

Charli, Lucie & Ruby in the Esplanade

Check out these great shots of Lisa & Bernard’s three little angels in Palmerston North. They had so much fun in the Esplanade playing with ducks and Autumn leaves. It’s worth pointing out that half of these shots are from the super talented Jen. She had a camera and managed to capture some amazing moments of the girls. Without two cameras there is no way we could have captured all the fun and excitement.

Lisa is a hairdresser in Levin and has just started her own business specialising in weddings. Check her out on Facebook.
